- It depends on what software you are running. Windows-95, for example,
- has the functionality built in. With earlier versions of DOS you
- generally had a choice between installing something called 'card
- services' or using a 'point enabler.'

- Card services take memory space, but allow for hot insertion and removal
- of cards. Point enablers usually run at boot time, initialize and install
- the card, and then go away. A point enabler can be run later, but then
- you probably can't remove the card and install a different one. Either
- one will install the modem on the next available com port, or perhaps
- replace an existing com port.
